Atlanta Slappers close 2043 chapter with move to Mexico City
After eight seasons in Atlanta, a 686–610 record and three playoff trips, the franchise opens its next chapter in Mexico City following a 93-win farewell season.
The Atlanta Slappers are moving to Mexico City for the 2044 season, becoming the Mexico City Axolotl after an eight-season Atlanta run that ended with a playoff berth.
The move carries an established club into a new city. Atlanta finished its final regular season 93–69, second in the Summit League Southeast Division, before Charlotte eliminated the Slappers four games to two in the opening playoff round. The Queens closed the series with a 5–2 victory on October 8.
From 2036 through 2043, Atlanta went 686–610 in regular-season play. The Slappers reached the postseason in 2038, 2039 and 2043, and their 93–69 finish in 2038 brought a division title. The final Atlanta season matched that 2038 win total, the club’s best over those eight years.
The franchise’s progress was uneven at first. Atlanta followed a 77–85 season in 2036 with a 70–92 finish in 2037, then improved by 23 wins the next year. Beginning with that 2038 breakthrough, the Slappers recorded six consecutive winning seasons. They won 89 games in 2039, 87 in 2040, 92 in 2041 and 85 in 2042 before returning to the playoffs in 2043.
That last Atlanta club scored 709 runs and allowed 634, a plus-75 differential. It hit 182 home runs and posted a 3.48 team ERA. The Slappers clinched their wild-card berth on September 16, but their postseason ended against the 112-win Queens.
Mexico City therefore inherits the history of a winning Atlanta team as the franchise prepares for 2044. The Axolotl name is already reflected in the current league directory, while the completed seasons through 2043 remain part of the Slappers’ Atlanta record.
The change follows the same offseason’s transitions from Portland to the Dallas Pegasi and from Pensacola to the Motown Soul in Detroit. For this franchise, the next season begins a Mexico City chapter after eight years of Atlanta baseball.
