Motown signs Willie Morell for four years and $46.5 million

The Soul add the 32-year-old third baseman and his 331 career home runs, with a torn knee ligament leaving his availability for 2044 uncertain.

The Motown Soul signed free-agent third baseman Willie Morell to a four-year, $46.5 million contract on November 26, 2043, adding an established power hitter whose latest reported knee injury leaves his availability for 2044 uncertain.

Morell, 32, has compiled 967 hits, 331 home runs and 758 runs batted in with a .239 career batting average, according to the league’s official signing announcement.

In the 2043 regular season, he hit .242 with 26 home runs and 70 RBI in 104 games, according to the league’s season statistics.

His injury history is a significant qualification to that production. The league’s published player history lists an August 1, 2043, diagnosis of a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his knee, with an estimated absence of 10–11 months. That initial estimate would extend into 2044; it is not a confirmed return date.

It was his second reported tear of that knee ligament. An August 29, 2039, entry also lists a torn posterior cruciate ligament, then with an estimated absence of 9–10 months. His history additionally includes a torn hamstring diagnosed in March 2038, with a projected three-week absence.

The repeated ligament injuries make availability an important consideration in assessing the signing, alongside Morell’s career power numbers. His 104 games in 2043 and his injury history are separately reported; the season statistics do not establish the reason for each game he missed.

Motown finished the 2043 regular season 77–85. The signing adds Morell to the Soul’s offseason roster as the club prepares for 2044, with the timing of his return still unresolved.
